Free Camping Beats Fuel Hike

We've been free camping for many years - all round Oz! It's a great way to offset the cost of fuel, especially towing a caravan on a long haul.

On one trip taking in South Australia, New South Wales and Queensland we met a grey nomad couple at Prairie Lions Free Camp in Far North Queensland. This was to be only their second free camp and being first to arrive they were mightily relieved to see our intentions to join them for the night.

Security

I was reminded of my concerns in our early days of free camping. Security was always first on my checklist although the Other Half cracked hardy. I must admit up-front that we've never had a single negative experience in terms of security. There have been three occasions when the hairs went up on the back of my neck simply because of the vibe of the place. Twice we moved on, but once the Other Half refused to budge and we got about as much sleep as parents of new-born twins. So, if for no other reason I would say trust your instincts or you're in for a long night.

I still feel more secure if at least one over-nighter joins us at a free camp. Best of all are those popular spots like Burra Gorge in South Australia and Rollingstone's Bushy Parker Park in Qld where over thirty rigs pull in and you're instantly welcomed into the grey nomad set - but get there early for a good spot!

Toilets

One of the reasons some free camps are very popular is that toilets are provided either by councils, National Parks, service or sporting clubs. To these providers I say a hearty thank you!

Power

Now you have to remember that free camping sites don't provide power - at least not usually. On this trip we found power provided at Kumbia (donation appreciated) and Wallumbilla on the Warrego Highway. Generally though you have to be independent. For some travellers this means a campfire and a torch or candle - which is okay outside the bushfire season.

Some travellers take a generator especially to keep the freezer going. If you're camping in a National Park check first if genies are okay. Another option is to harness solar power to keep a battery charged and run a 12 volt set-up.

We find that we can manage just with a deep-cycle battery to power our needs for three or four days. We run our three-way fridge on gas. On a vegetarian diet we don't have much to freeze. Then we go to a caravan park to re-charge the battery, do the laundry and have a swim in a pool. Really, your lifestyle will guide your choice of power source.

Water

You need to do your research to see if water will be available at a free campsite. Sometimes there is mains water from a tap; or a tank which may or may not contain rain water; and other times there is water for washing but not for drinking.

We always take some water with us just in case. If we have a long distance to travel we take on water at the town closest to the campsite to save carrying weight and using more fuel. Even so, we have found this risky as water is sometimes scarce in towns and not available to travellers.

Pets

One of the great advantages of free camping is that the family pet can often come too. They are usually prohibited in National Parks and some council sites.

In order to maintain this privilege please keep your dog on a lead if required; or if other people, wildlife or stock are around - and pick up their droppings.

Locating Free Camps

So, how do we know where the free camps are? We have four main sources of information. Firstly there is the grapevine - that communication network among travellers that may be word-of-mouth through a conversation overheard in a laundry. Caravan and four-wheel-drive magazines are another way to learn about free camps, and you can see photos of what to expect.

Then there are the Information Offices for each region that publish brochures on what's available in their area, and others too. These days we rely largely on a publication called Camps Australia Wide which is updated regularly and gives information on the facilities available at each campsite.

A Model Free Camp

On this trip we came across our ideal free campsite! It is at St Lawrence in Queensland. Why is it so great? It is a large area at a recreation ground divided into two halves. One half is for travellers with generators and the other half is for people who value peace and quiet. It has toilets and showers - with a coin feed for a hot shower and hot water at the basins. All is immaculately clean!

Then there is a port-a-loo dumpsite, and a clearly signed potable water outlet. There is a large covered area for rainy days, even a fenced and shaded area for children to play on the lush manicured lawn. The night we visited there were forty-three overnighters. For councils or other providers interested in setting up a free camp surely here is your model!

Free camping is the way of the future to off-set soaring costs. What better way for small and medium-sized communities to benefit economically from the travelling grey nomads. We are an expanding group and this is a great way to keep us travelling further and attract our dollars. Even the larger towns and cities are losing caravan parks due to high costs on valuable land.

For those travellers yet to try free camping rest assured there is an entry level to suit any comfort zone. A little research is all you need.

Discount Vacations: A Great Way To Get Away For Less

We all need to get away once in a while to relax and recharge. Whether it is a skiing trip to play in the snow, or a vacation to a tropical beach to soak up the sun, you can do it for less when you take advantage of discount vacations.

The best time to look for discount vacations is during off-peak travel times. For example, if you want to visit Mickey Mouse in Orlando, you will get better deals if you go during the months of September and October. Those are low months for tourism so airlines and hotels charge lower prices in order to attract customers. Not only will you save money, you will also enjoy fewer crowds and shorter lines at the attractions.

Another way to find discount vacations is to seek out all-inclusive or package deals. By bundling your flight, hotel room, and meals into a single price, you can often save money over buying them separately. Also, if you pre-purchase your meals, you are more likely to stick to your vacation budget since you won't need to carry money around and be tempted by impulse food purchases.

Certain vacation destinations are noted for offering discounts. Take Las Vegas for example. The casinos attract tourists by offering very low rates on accommodations and buffet meals in hopes that once you are there, you will spend money gambling in the casino. The good thing is you can take advantage of those savings without having to place a single bet. Plus there are many activities to take part in and things to see and do in the Las Vegas area that you can stay busy for your whole vacation without even entering a casino.

Another way to get vacation discounts is to book early. If you plan your trip several months ahead and buy your flight tickets early, you can often save quite a bit over buying at the last minute. Plus you will be able to watch for special promotions at hotels and car rental companies, and book them at your leisure when the prices are the best.

Another great way to save money on your trip is to share expenses. If you have always wanted to go to the Far East, or some other exotic location, you may be able to save by going with a travel group. By sharing hotel rooms and buying group meals, you will pay less individually than you would by traveling alone.

If your budget is really tight but you have uncontrollable wanderlust, then you may need to get creative. Think about renting a room in a private home, or camping in a tent. Pursue nature activates and attend events that are free. With a little ingenuity, you can get away from it all without breaking the bank.

When you are looking to get away for less then trust the travel agents at Budget Travel Warehouse Inc 360 Springbank Drive London, ON N6J 1G5? (519) 473-6261. Offering get vacations at low prices, be sure to click here to learn more.

10 Excellent Reasons to Dump Your Boyfriend While Backpacking Together

Travelling with your boyfriend can be brilliant. City breaks, camping weekends... they're both romantic and fun. But backpacking round the world? Forget it. Here are 10 reasons why ditching your boyfriend while backpacking will make you a much happier traveller.

1. The double handbag. "Have you got room for this in your bag, honey?" Every girlfriend rolls their eyes at this. A tidy shoulder bag turns becomes a santa's sack of surplus items from your boyfriend's shorts' pockets. One word: manbag.

2. He spends more money than you. Whether it's on a some big nights out with new backpacker mates or just losing a few pesos here and there from his shorts' pockets, it all adds up. Couples on a joint budget beware.

3. You'll meet twice as many people. Fact.

4. You rarely want to do the same things. Whatever the situation, the chances of you wanting to do the same things and the same time on the same day are minimal. Possibly the greatest source of daily conflict between couples.

5. Conversation is boring. Well, it can be. When you spend all day, every day, with the same person you don't have any stories or fun stuff to tell each other. There are no "guess what?!" times, which can make conversation a bit like hard work sometimes.

6. Jealousy. Don't get me wrong, only a handful of boyfriends are the jealous type. In fact, mine wasn't really at all. But it's a sad fact that when you meet backpacker mates of the opposite sex, being in a relationship can mean you don't get to hang out with your new mate as you would do if you were single.

7. The emotional sponge. You might be loving a place while he might be wishing was anywhere else. A day of travelling bliss can be ruined because you can't ignore the fact that the person you're with is tired, stressed, or unhappy.

8. Those little habits. So he might snore at home sometimes. No big deal. Now change the location to a hotter-than-the-sun guesthouse bedroom complete with broken fan and dubious-looking mosquito net. Those little foibles that are sort of cute at home will have you reaching for the nearest heavy blunt object.

9. Planning. It's rare to find a couple who plan their travel itinerary equally. You'll agree on the key places you want to visit, but it's the girlfriend who'll sort the logistics, the whens, hows and how much.

10. Opportunity for adventure. Lone backpacking girls shouldn't be fearful; solo travel leads to unexpected acts of kindness and spontaneity. Last year I was walking along the road in Uluwatu, Bali, when a car full of gorgeous Kiwi pro surfers and their photographer ask if I'd like to go to the beach to hang out while they did their photoshoot. Those unbelievable 'movie moments' simply don't happen when you're with your boyfriend.

If you're shaking your head in agreement of more than, say, seven of these, then take my advice: go solo. You'll never look back. And hey, if it's meant to be, it's meant to be... right?

Planning a Memorable But Cheap Holiday

I'm sure you have dreamed about taking that perfect vacation. You've thought about traveling to exotic countries or considered taking a month or two from work to go backpacking. While it might not be possible to travel around the world or be away from work for more than 2 weeks because of time or financial constraints, it doesn't mean you can't have a great vacation. There are several things you can do to have a cheap holiday that's both satisfying and memorable.

• Look for cheap flights: With patience and careful planning, you can score some affordable tickets. Regularly check travel websites or an airline's homepage for special deals. This might mean you'll be booking your flight well in advance or you'll be traveling at the last minute, but the savings you'll get are amazing. Traveling during the off-season also means big savings.

• Learn to pack and travel light: If you're only going away for a few days, use a backpack or any hand luggage. Just bring the essentials and leave behind non-essential items like a hair dryer. You'll save a lot of time and money if you don't have to check-in or pay the baggage fee.

• Eat where the locals eat: Food is one of the biggest expenses a person makes when on holiday. Eating out can set you back a pretty penny, unless you eat where the locals do. Ask where the best local restaurant is and you'll eat well during your cheap holiday.

• Do your research and look for places you can go to for free: Before deciding on where you want to go, Google it and search for places and activities that you can go to for free or for a minimal fee. For example, look for free museums, parks, organic markets or open air performances.

• Go to the beach: This is a great place to go if you want to stretch your budget. You don't need to spend money to go sunbathing, read, play beach volleyball, swim or build a sand castle.

• Stay alcohol free: You might not notice it, but alcohol sometimes causes major spending during a vacation. Most of us can drink responsibly, but we sometimes forget this when we're in a different country and enjoying our vacation. Remember that a tipsy tourist transforms into a big spender at times. Think about this as well, we go on a holiday for a change of pace, not to keep doing the same thing in a different locale. If you're always hitting the bars while in the city, and you're still doing the same thing on your vacation, then what was the point of leaving?

• Go for a walk: Going around on public transportation can be expensive. One way to cut cost during your holiday is to walk. Get a map of the area and check areas that you can cover on foot. You'll save some cash and see more of the town. If you really need a transport, avoid taxis and go for other public transportation.

Everybody needs a break from time to time. Going on a holiday is a great way for you to recharge your batteries and learn more about yourself. Despite the sluggish economy, there's no reason why you should deprive yourself of it. With a little ingenuity and creativity, you can have that perfect cheap holiday.
